Hello,
You could use screws, there are many types. Flat head, Domed head, Mirror Screw ( have covers) etc.. Take a look along the section at your DIY store. Good luck!
I don't have my blog post up about it yet but I just installed a cable railing system on our deck and we absolutely LOVE it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r-uqD-65wc
Handrail or Guardrail?
“Decorative” is only if it 24” or less above the ground.
Higher than that and it has to meet Safety Criteria in the unified US Building Code, called the IRC. If you need those Specs, I can summarize them for you.
I’ll find some decorative plastic panels pics that Menards has on clearance and post them.
Cables look nice. My aunt put in a high quality plexiglass. They had a view that they just could not block. It was nice. Needs to be cleaned, however.
There’s 3-4 patterns at Menards, but this one I’m waiting for the price to be reduced, lol.
It can be held to a frame with clips or construction adhesive, if it is going to be decorative.
Can be spray painted.
Hi! Planter boxes would look great!

Have you considered rope? Could be straight or macrame.
Is it raised? codes may require rails.
You could use rope, chain, or even ome type of cable horizontaly from post to post. It can be quite attractive and is a great change from the usual vertical spindles, etc. Lattice panels cut to fit might be another option for your porch.

You can build your rails in a decorative pattern, like chippendale.
Wire instead of traditional wood rails is very popular.
If you’re going to build something out of un-treated wood, it will last about 5 years, before its obviously falling apart.
What is your labor worth?
I've seen this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/518547344592940318/ and think it looks nice. We're thinking of doing it when we re-do our deck.
