Hi Doris,
You can buy and the rail from a DIY store fix to the wall with glue and plugs or you can use special brackets and a rail . Measure up the wall the distance you wish the rail to be installed. Mark the wall all the way up and draw a line to follow. Best wishes.

Indoor or out?
If outdoor, you can attach to the stairs. We did a 4x4 post at the bottom, another at the top and a 2x4 in the center if you feel it's needed. Cut the top off at an angle to match the stair angle. Four 1x6 boards: #1-across the top for the rail, #2-along the top, #3-along the bottom, #4-mid way between #2 & #3. It gives a farmhouse fence style.
If you don't want to have that feel, you can use spindles.

Are the stairs in the open or is there a wall next to it? If you have a wall, there are brackets and handrail that fasten to the wall. Ensure the brackets go into a stud or other structural component of the wall.
Unless you ate good at woodwork and have the tools, it is usually less expensive to buy a section of railing. You can find them online and at local building supplies. Check online or call ahead to make sure it's in stock. I like to check online for Home Depot or Lowe's, because not only do I know what is in stock, but it will tell you which aisle and bin for finding things. Good luck and stay safe!

Hello Doris,
Are stairs outside or inside? With or without a wall on either side? If you have walls, you can fit A HANDRAIL to the wall. If no wall then fit an upright to the top and bottom stair to one or both sides, and then a hand rail on top. You will need to grade the Uprights to be able to hold the handrail!
