It could be a number of things... Is your lawn growing in spots, is it in a shady area or under pine trees, has it had a chemical spill, pets, weeds, weather..to name a few. Please write back with more specifics on your lawn.
Hello,
Dethatch it, Rake it, Fork it, Re-seed it. Water it and watch it grow. Use an Autumn Lawn Weed and Feed. Best wishes
The soil may need aerating. If it's compacted, the grass may not grow well. Also fertilizer can help, but be sure you are applying it at the right time of the year. Check with a local lawn and garden center for what's best in your area.
Hello. They are comprehensive approaches is to turf management what are the first ones if you do a soil test.
Soil is the framework for having healthy happy plants.
Other aspects to consider are weed management and aeration, fertilization and reseeding.
You might want to check with your local Cooperative extension. In my zone 7 Spring fertilization is not recommended. Despite what fertilizer companies promote— at my location you want the grass is to develop a healthy dense deep root structure and not just green foliage on the top. So fall fertilization is preferred and more highly recommended in my region.
Your grass type and location will determine when the fertilization should occur there’s a difference between warm season and cold season grasses.
For your local recommendations I would highly suggest contacting your cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well.
Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education— to help you out— is their goal.
You can have your soil sampled to see what nutrients are needed but in general, a weed and feed. This article has some good pointers:

I agree that contacting your County Extension office can provide you excellent advice if you provide them a soil sample. There are many good fertilizers that can be applied and often additional water changes the looks of a lawn with a week or 10 days.

Soil tests are always recommended every few years. Most every speaker in my master gardeners class recommend this for optimal way to address your soil and lawn and garden circumstances. The test box and instructions can be obtained from your local cooperative extension, unless you want your lawn service to do it.
You have to have a good soil to meet your needs to growing healthy dense turf grass. From there you will find out recommendations to promote the grass growing conditions to include fertilize lime ( pH adjustment) aerate and seed. Pre Emergent lawn weeds can be addressed by a lawn application in the springtime—>here in zone 7 the time the forsythia are blooming.
Please also remember to utilize your local cooperative extension office for any lawn, gardening, garden pest ID and weed Id and remediation problems.
