Mix 1 part vinegar with 3 parts water in a bucket. Use a scrub brush to clean the carpet with the solution, but do not saturate the carpet. Follow up with an old towel to soak up any excess moisture.
Here's another inexpensive method, it also includes what to do with stains on the carpet:

Hi Harold. Many grocery and home improvement stores rent carpet cleaners. They are usually pretty inexpensive and you can usually get an extra day if you rent early in the week (at least in Canada). They do a good job and it is definitely the most cost effective way to clean a lot of carpet.
I bought a cheap bus sell cleaner, under $100 at Ollie’s, and use white cleaning vinegar and water. The version I have heard the water and the smell fades quickly.
I bought a rug cleaner (Hoover) and it was worth the investment. 8 pets later it is going strong and have had for at least 20 years. Works well and under $150. You will have for a very long time. I did buy a Pet Pro one for hardwood floors and I would NOT recommend that one.
Lots of ideas

We determined that it was cheaper to buy a steam cleaner on sale then to rent one over and over. Then there is hauling it back and forth from the store. It is nice to have one any time you need it (yes even a 2 am on a Sunday).
Rent a carpet cleaner! I can rent them at my local grocery store!
