DIY the Perfect Pumpkin Basket Lantern
If you want to add a new decor piece to your fall collection, this tutorial is what you need! I made an amazing pumpkin basket lantern to decorate my home. This woven, rustic basket is just so gorgeous and creates the perfect dreamy ambiance! If you want to learn the ins and outs of making this awesome lantern, follow my step-by-step guide, and get started on DIYing your own. You won’t regret adding this unique piece to your space!
Tools and materials:
- Grapevine
- Paper vine
- Wire
- Pliers
- LED lights
- LED wax candle
To make the spine for this basket I used a piece of grapevine and paper string and intertwined the two using black and copper wire to hold the spine together.
I made 5 and a half spines and laid three down vertically and 3 and a half horizontally, over the other three.
I then took a different vine called kudzu and used it to bind the spines together. You can always use wire or a different vine for this step. I went under the spines on the bottom and over the spines on the top about 3 or 4 times to bind them together.
Once the spines were bound together, I started doing an over, under pattern using the same vine I had used to bind them. If you need to adjust any of the spine pieces, now is the time because they become a little tough to adjust later.
I had about 6 inches of winding so far and as I continued, I decided to switch to grapevine to help give the basket a more rustic look. I pulled up the spine pieces, which was easy since they each had a piece of pliable wire. I really wanted the basket to be round so I slowly pulled the spine pieces upwards as I weaved the grapevine through.
I weaved another final piece of grapevine and then tucked the end into a small gap that I found in the basket.
I stopped weaving and focused on creating a sort of cage look for the basket. I started pushing the spines of the basket inwards and used a copper wire, to hold them in place. I made sure to twist the wire around a few pieces and then move on to the next pieces of the spine.
I took a piece of wire and wrapped it around all of the pieces so that they would sit in place securely. It’s amazing to see the pumpkin form finally coming together. I played around with the pieces, bending the wire to create the perfect, round pumpkin shape.
To add some extra flair to this amazing pumpkin basket I decided to thread these awesome LED lights through the spines.
Finally, the last thing I needed to add was my candle. I decided to use a fake LED wax candle. I slid it through the vines and it looked incredible!
This lantern sets the perfect ambiance! Where would you put this piece? Let me know in the comments below!
