Christmas Gift Bags Into Throw Pillows
Christmas decor is starting to fill the stores and I can't lie...there are some cute fabric gift bags out there!
As you can tell from the title of this tutorial, I knew I wanted to create a pillow project with them. I love how they turned out. It's a super easy and quick no sew project. I hope you'll give it a try!
- Fabric Gift Bags
- Fabric Glue
- Poly-Fil
- Fabric Scissors
- Seam Ripper (optional)
- Safety Pin
- Fine grit Sand Paper (optional)
Cut the drawstring out of your gift bags with fabric scissors.
Using scissors or a seam ripper, remove the thread that held the drawstring.
This is an optional step, but one I felt the project needed.
I took a fine grit sandpaper to the whole image. As you can see in the photo there will be "fuzz" that sands off. Be careful not to sand in one spot for too long and cause a hole in your fabric.
After sanding the bag I wiped the image with a damp cloth and removed the extra "fuzz".
Here you can see the difference in the images. The left side is un-sanded and the right side is the sanded image.
My gift bags came in a set of 2 and this ticking stripe bag makes the perfect pair of pillows.
I also sanded both sides of the striped bag. This photo shows the difference, which in my opinion is not as dramatic of a change as the bag with the image. (Left: un-sanded; Right: sanded)
NOTE- Using a fine sandpaper also softens the fabric and why I ended up giving all sides at least a light sanding.
Fill your bag/pillow with Poly-Fill stuffing to your desired fullness. I started with a lot but quickly realized I could not get it to stay closed.
I used a safety pin to keep the center together and glued one side at a time.
With your fingers, hold the glued seam together for 30-60 seconds. Then check to make sure it stays together by letting go.
This is what the seams ended up looking like once fully glued.
Here are the finished pillows styled. I think they will make a nice addition to my Christmas decor this year. Comment and let me know if you try this project!

If you use old plastic grocery bags for stuffing you can use the pillows on your patio or deck without the problem of wet cushions!
