This is what it looked like before. There was nothing wrong with the doors except they were ugly and considering that it's a big part of what you see when you face the house, I didn't like that.
$20 Carriage Doors
What do you do when you have a perfectly functional garage door and no real need to replace them and spend a huge amount of money on new ones - other than the fact that they're ugly? Well you make your own carriage doors for $20 of course!
I started by painting the garage door the same cream color as the trim on the house. I had leftover paint from when the house was last painted so I just used that.
Next I used painters tape to tape off my "windows". I used 1/2" wide tape and this was the width of my "muntins".
Next I painted over the "windows" with the same base color again to seal the edges of the tape and prevent any of the black paint from seeping through. This is extremely important when you want really crisp lines on high contrast techniques.
Next I painted over them with black exterior paint. I used 2 coats.
I also taped off and painted a very thin line in the middle of the doors to make it appear as though there was a gap and that it was two separate doors. Once I peeled off the painters tape and added my magnetic faux handles and hinges, I couldn't have been happier with the results. Even my neighbors thought I put in new doors and didn't know the "windows" weren't real.

How wide is the line in the middle of the doors to create the appearance of a gap? Love the idea and will be doing it myself soon! Great job!!

I didn't make it very wide because, although I wanted the appearance of 2 doors, I didn't want it to look like a stripe. I'd say approximately 1/4 inch. I just used my regular width painters tape and ran a strip on either side of the gap I wanted to leave, lining it up by eye. I continued the stripe right over the metal handle at the base of my garage door so that it would sort of disappear.
