You could take a panoramic image of a moutain scene and use that as a guide - wrap it around the tree and sketch it out. Here is one panoramic pic I found on Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/508836457933212082/

I would look for photos of mountain scenes that you can use for your design - we really don't have an idea of what it is you would like to paint - so photos would be a good start

How cool. I have seen carvings but not paintings. Please post the project when done. I would search for landscape photography as inspiration.

Hi Liz, start by smoothing it (sanding), then lightly sketch the design you want to do then get the colors you want in acrylic paint and have fun creating! You can correct mistakes by painting them over!
Depending upon your painting skill level, you might be able to locae a snapshot of a mountainous areas you love and digitize and and enlarge to the size you need to cover the stump and use it as a guide for your particular stump. Thre are many creative ways to decorate a stump. One I've seen is to draw a face on the base and then plant succulents on the top as a hairstyle.
Cute! I'd use acrylic paint and finish with a matte poly
Maybe paint it like a fairy garden with a door and tree with greanary daisy’s etc.
Hi Liz. I like the idea of painting a fairy garden around your tree stump. The proper product to use for tree trunk painting is water-based latex paint. The paint needs to be diluted at a rate of one gallon latex mixed with 4 or 5 quarts of water. Good luck Liz and Happy Holidays.
Sounds like a great idea. One would have to be quite artistic to do that. Might be a good idea after it gets painted to apply a clear seal finish to preserve the art.

Having my bachelor's in Fine Arts, I'm going to suggest "Paint By. Number".
First, measure the circumference of the tree with a seamstress tape measure and make a stencil-able pattern by using the Images filter on your search engine.
Look for stained glass patterns and then print them out, after sizing them to be at the scale that fits your tree trunk. Tape them together so that they're as long as the circumference of the tree.
Then take an Exacto knife and cut out the stained glass solder joints on your taped together "stencil".
Thumb tack the completed stencil to the tree and then use colored markers to color in the stencil grooves.
Now you have a Paint By Number ready to be filled in.
