Is there a suggestion for removing a storage bench in my bedroom?

I have a storage bench in my bedroom. The top of it gets a lot of wear because my dogs sit on it to look out the window so it’s worn and needs to be recovered.

any suggestions?

Do you want to remove the bench entirely or just change out the top? Bench is probably just screwed into the wall. Top can be fixed by cutting off old fabric and putting a new piece of foam and fabric on and stapling it down.

  • It sounds like you could just refinish/recover the top. If it's removable, the job should be pretty easy. Can you tell us a little more?

Could you cover the top with something? Or refinish it with a very durable finish like marine varnish?

A trip to Joann's fabric might be a place to start if you are going to upholsterer the bench, you might consider a heavy duty fabric that is going to hold up to dogs jumping up to see out the window. Something along the weather resistant seating for outdoors furniture.

If you plan on refinishing the bench, something in very durable paint or polycrylic sealer would work. Good suggestion by Frugal Family Times.

    Hello Jo,

Yes, use a Deck Chair Canvas, or cover it in a Vinyl Floor Covering that will Cut and Bend to fit. My Aunt did that to the top of an Ottoman some years ago, and it is still going well today!

Hello. Could a padded seat pad be constructed? If you placed some dog beds there would the dogs use that?

Another alternative would be to get some fabric or even vinyl and staple it around the top in an upholstered way.

is the storage bench built in? if not just take it out of the room - or you could cover it with an inexpensive fabric or even vinyl for the pups to lay on

Don't know if this will help but I have an old cedar chest that my dogs loves to sit on and look out the window but the cushioned seat was looking ratty from years of wear.

I sort of cheated and ended up buying a very stretchy removable cover for the chest.

This allows me to hide the fabric that was first put on with something I can remove in a minute and wash it. It also gives you the ability to add foam without reupholstering.

sounds like your dogs enjoy it - do you just want to recover it?

You can take the covering off the top, sand it down and stain. Or get an outdoor cushion to use on top of it.

Is the bench attached to some other part of the room, such as walls, floor ?

What is the top covered with now?

Do you want to remove it completely from the bedroom, or just recover it?

I would think the easiest thing would be adding new material with upholstery tacks. You can clean the current cover and then put the new material over it. Then tack in place all the way around with the tacks.

  • Could you post a photo of the bench so we could see the construction. If it's fabric and you can access the bottom easily, you can replace the foam and recover with fabric and staple it down. If it's wood, refinishing would work.
