You can always paint although I would not use chalked paint as it comes off easily if scratched or rubbed and headboards get much more wear and tear than you realize.

Hi, the best paint for plastic is Spray paint – paint + primer that adheres to plastic. Krylon and Rustoleum are two brands that carry this type of spray paint
