Can I still save a rusty bistro table?
We have a bistro table with glass on top and metal surround which is rusty, chipped and falling apart. Can I still save the table and replace the metal around it? I've attached a photo.

Sorry but it looks like this guy is beyond repair. The metal holding the glass top is completely eaten away and is a danger.
Sad to say, no, it is beyond repair.
You might be able to repurpose the glass for something, but that metal is too far gone. Sorry.
Hello. Besides the rust and chipping is the metal in good structural shape?
We were in the same situation a few years back with a cosmeticly rusty chippy inherited mesh patio set left by our previous homeowners. When we went to the home-improvement stores the current selections of mesh furniture offered were not as good quality as my hand me down. We got a wire brush and cleaned and sanded all of our rust and chipping away and spray primed-painted with the rustoleum paint and primer spray paint. Our newly refurbished patio set looks better than before. It was definitely worth it for us to put the time in trouble into the rehab and the seven or eight cans of spray paint that we used.
If it was just rust you could repair but this has metal on the left of the picture that is missing & that is part of the structural intregrity of the table to support the glass. Not sure it is worth trying to piece in a band of metal to hold the supporting edges together where the metal is missing. I see these in the trash all of the time. You could build a new base out of wood for the glass but that is up to you.
I agree it looks like the base might be too far gone but you could rebuild a new base for it and definitely reuse that top!
I think it is too far gone to save - it would take a lot of work to clean the rust off and make the base sturdy again but you could try it would be a lot of work. The band around the glass may not come off without breaking the glass. You should watch for them to go on sale and buy one at the end of the season
Yep, it's rusted beyond repair.
It's possible you can save it but it seems in really bad shape on the left side. You might do better re-using the glass in a new frame.
When you take the glass out, the edges will probably be unpolished and sharp.
Finding another table frame sounds unlikely & therefore I would look at a flexible rubberized moulding with a channel to "finish" the glass edge and set it on a base made from something like a large pot.
I cleaned and scraped my metal edges. Mine is put together with rivets so I could not take it off the base. The underside I covered with paper so the metal could be sprayed. It has lasted about 10 years now. I was just looking yesterday and it could use another coat of paint. SO if you can get the metal smooth it is worth the effort. If the metal breaks then no to rehab
Namaste, I am a gal that thinks “outside the box” most of the time. Maybe you could take the rusty metal completely off the glass table top. Then go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and see if you could find some metal flashing or plastic or rubber tubing that could be easily wrapped and glued around the glass. Have no idea what the price would be but I would try to save it myself. You might not want to go to that expense though. Or you could possible make a wooden table top to replace the glass one. Round Barn Quilt Table
I see table frames at the curb all the time. It's usually the glass that break before the table frame rusts out. If you can find a frame that fits you glass you can spray the table to match any chairs you have.
There is some rust damage so if you can get a metal strip to wrap your table around or even piece of rubber molding it will for sure help to salvage that table
Can you pop the glass out? If so, clean up the metal with rust removers and repaint, then reinsert the glass. If the glass won't come out, just tape on some paper or plastic then clean up and repaint.
You can find some frame which can fit the glass then replace it. Or if the glass can't be removed, you can just use metal strip.
