Creative Ways to Use Tray Ceilings
I built this tray ceiling to raise a ceiling into an attic space while leaving the original wall and ceiling junction intact. These were low 7-foot ceilings, by raising more than 50% of the ceiling above 7'6" the entire space can be counted as living space without discounting its value on an appraisal. I also have built trays like this in basements by building dropped soffits to hide duct work, etc. Even if ducts are just on one or two edges of the ceiling, I go ahead and create soffits on all sides of the room to create a tray. Turn "problems" into features.
