DIY Fire Pit

How would you like to spend the evening with your family around a cozy campfire. In 6 easy steps I will show you how to make your own fire pit.
I purchased a fire pit kit from Lowe's for $200. It comes with the steel ring and 36 stones. This matches nicely with my new flagstone patio.
I used paver base and tamped until the ground was level. Here, I'm beginning to lay the stones, I used the fire ring as my template or guide.
First layer is down and perfectly level. Outside dimension is 44 inches and inside around 31 inches.
Add the next two layers and make sure to stagger the rocks. I decided not to glue the stones together, but some do. Now you can slip the fire ring in place and---you're done. Go roast some hot dogs and make some s'mores. Enjoy!

Denise on Jun 21, 2015Stupid question, but why does one need that fire ring? Does it provide some sort of protection or simply keep the stones from turning black?
