Simple DIY Shutters

If you have ever needed to give the outside of your home a little curb appeal, then shutters are perfect for you. I know they did wonders for the outside of my home. They are really super simple to make and only take an afternoon to build.

The first step is to cut the boards and drill pocket holes. The cutting list and pocket hole placement guide can be found on my blog, The Crafted Maker.
Now attach the boards together with pocket holes to make up a shutter.

It depends on the number of windows you want to hang shutters on, but I needed to make four in total.
To add a little decoration to the shutters, place a piece across the boards at the top and bottom and attach with wood screws.
At this point, the shutter is built. It's time to give it some life. I chose to paint mine black, but you could make them any color of paint or stain you wanted.

Once the paint or stain is dry, its time to show these off by attaching them to the house. I had a brick exterior, so I used a hammer drill to screw in the shutters. This step will be easier if you have an exterior such as vinyl or wood siding.
Now stand back an enjoy your handy work! These black shutters added so much to my white house.

Classic hardware for shutters that function is a called a shutter-dog and hinge set. If you computer search that phrase a number of manufacturers/sellers will come up.
