How to Build a Cedar Flower Planter

1 Material
The front door of our house is a little hidden and I have been trying to find ways to help it stand out. I asked my husband to help me build a cedar flower planter for each side of our front door and a window box to help draw your eye to the front and add some color with some more flowers.

We had some cedar boards leftover from our cedar fence that my husband built.    Cedar is a great choice for outdoor planters because its bug resistant and weathers naturally and chemical free.  And in our case it was free which is awesome!!!  All we needed to buy was the exterior screws:).

After cutting down the wood we created the bottom of the cedar planter with 3 boards and a thin strip screwed in at the ends to hold them together…the side you see will be the bottom

We made 4 sides with 3 boards laid next to each other and a piece of 1x3 at one end of the boards that overlaps each end by the thickness of the boards...in my case 1 inch

Attach all 4 sides to the bottom and add another 1x3 trim around the top

After finishing off the top of the planter I added a hydrangea shrub to the flower planter.  It has been fun changing out the plants to match the season.  To read more detailed instructions and step by step photos of this DIY project click on the link below and it will take you to my blog, Lehman lane.
