How to Make Laundry Detergent With 3 Ingredients
3 Ingredient Laundry Detergent
I love being self sufficient and saving money. Especially when I can buy just 3 ingredients to make this homemade laundry detergent and have a batch done in 10 minutes. It not only saves me money per load, it gets clothes cleaner. Having a house with 3 teenagers and a husband that works construction, the laundry is never ending. So, are you ready to make your own money saving laundry detergent?
Supplies Needed:
- Borax
- Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
- Fels Naptha
- Grater or Food Processor
- Bowl
- airtight container
Begin by grating the Fels Naptha soap bar into a container. I use the fine side and keep this grater only for soap. It takes me about 5-7 minutes for one bar. I keep the bar nub, the part that I can’t grate without getting my fingers, for those extra stubborn stains. These also keeps from wasting.
Then I add approx 14 oz of Borax to the grated bar soap. You can adjust this anywhere from 10-14oz depending on what you prefer. But I can make it stretch a little farther with using 14 oz and didn’t see a huge difference with less Borax.
Same thing goes for the Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. I add 14 oz but this can be adjusted. Also, make sure you are using the washing soda and not baking soda. There IS a difference.
Just mix these 3 ingredients really well. I used a paper plate to make a funnel, or if you have a funnel you can use that. I placed the mixture into an airtight container and repeated the process until my container was full.
Now that you have it all mixed and ready to go, I place a tablespoon measuring scoop. I use 1-2 tablespoons per load of laundry depending on size of load and how soiled they are.
I love being able to make our own and save a little money in the process.

I use to make this years ago ...Does it end up cheaper compared to buying a bottle of arm n hammer detergent today? I looked up the ingredients that came to roughly around 14.00 for one batch with leftover borax and washing powder.

I previously used gain. It lasts quite awhile since you’re only using 1-2tbsp per load. And leftover ingredients to use towards your next batch or to use as cleaner in your home. So I think it’s worth it

In the picture of ingredients, it shows 3 bars of Fels Naptha. Do you use 3 bars for the 14 oz mixture?
