Learn how to make an easy citronella water candle. This doesn't have wax, so it's perfect for beginners. It makes a beautiful center piece too!

Citronella naturally repel bugs, so I used citronella and lemongrass essential oils in the oil. You can use your favorite oils or a blend to make different scents. These water candles are for outdoor use only. Keep away from pets or children. Use only waterproof decorations. Dump it after each use and refill it.

To make this water candle, you will need:

  • Glass container
  • Vegetable oil
  • Plastic succulent
  • Rocks or gems
  • Citronella essential oil
  • Lemongrass essential oil
  • Water candle wicks

I have more information about each of the supplies on my easy DIY citronella candle tutorial, so be sure to click over for more information.

Combine vegetable oil and essential oils in a mason jar. For every 2 tablespoons of oil, add 5 drops lemongrass and 10 drops citronella. I quadrupled the batch to have oil for later.

Then place the gems in the container. Add the succulent. Add water to cover the succulent. My succulent wanted to float, so I glued gems onto it.

Add about 1/2 inch of oil on top of the water.

Place the wick on the oil. It will float.

I find it's easiest to assemble these outside. Light the candle and enjoy the scent of citronella and lemongrass to repel bugs.

Never leave a candle unattended. Make sure the water completely covers anything that you place in the container.
