DIY Wood Witch’s Hat for Halloween Decor

I had the old charger in my craft stash from a thrift store purchase last year. I searched for an appropriately sized craft wood triangle, but I couldn’t find one, so I decided to make my own. We measured and cut a triangle to size from a piece of craft wood I purchased at Michaels.

I used Rust-O’Leum American Accents 2X Ultra Cover to spray both the wood and the base. The wood needed two coats for full coverage. To protect the paint, I used Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish in gloss.

Once both pieces were dry, I used E6000 glue to attach the triangle to the base. Hot glue would work, too, but E6000 gives a more permanent bond.

Decorating the hat was the best part of the project. Use any matching ribbon, a few scrapbooking bows, and some adhesive gems to give the hat a unique look. I used hot glue to attach the ribbon and then tied a simple bow and glued that to the striped ribbon. The finishing touch was to glue on a sparkly bat that I bought at Dollar Tree.

As I was setting the witch’s hat up to take some photos, I thought of a fun way to use it, not only for decor, but as a serving tray, too. I bought the green shot glasses at Dollar Tree last year. We’re going to offer potion to any adult who would like one at our Halloween block party. Our potion will be Fireball shots – perfect for Halloween! 

This would make a fun centerpiece for a Halloween party buffet, too. Instead of the shot glasses, you could use paper candy cups or mini cupcake liners to hold small candy.
