Litter Box Furniture

5 Materials
3 Hours
Living in an RV, there really isn't a lot of room to place a litter box out of sight. The majority of the litter box furniture I'd seen was way out of my budget. I decided to build my own, and it looks great, while costing me only $80.00. It provides a way to keep my cat's box out of sight, and additional seating for occasional guests.
Sauder Wooden Toy Box (Espresso)
I found this beautiful wooden toy box at Walmart. The espresso color would blend with my decor, but the best feature was the hinged lid which would allow us easy access for sifting.
Before assembling the box, decide which end you want your cat to be able to enter from. Mark off a rectangle 11" W x 9" H. (gives max opening without interfering with structural integrity of box).
Use a 9/16" drill bit to drill pilot holes in each corner, then use jig saw to cut out rectangle.
Use black paint (for espresso colored box) to conceal cut edges of rectangle opening. I chose black as the plastic trim on the box is also black.
The next step is to assemble the box. It looks great like this, but I thought about the handiness of an extra seat, and added a 2" cushion on top for comfort.

I used 1" foam, cut two pieces 15"x 33" (the measurement of the lid) then glued the pieces together using spray adhesive. (I didn't think to photo this portion)

I then used outdoor upholstery fabric to fashion an envelop style cushion cover (for easy removal for washing) trimmed with a coordinating piping, and stitched Velcro strips onto the bottom portion of the cushion.
Place self adhering Velcro on the lid of the toy box making sure it matches placement with the Velcro on your cushion
I placed a litter catching mat toward the opening, and the litter box toward the back away from the opening.
And there you have it. Extra seating hiding the litter box. Time start to end approximately 3 hours.
