I am all about pumpkins this week of Thanksgiving! The materials and idea for this tutorial Embellish Pumpkins with Lace has been floating around in my head for at least a year now. I am so excited to share this project with you today because it turned out way better than even I had imagined! A CRAFT LOVE instead of a CRAFT FAIL – don’t you just love it when that happens? I definitely do!

Apply Basecoat

Gather all supplies. Basecoat exterior of paper mache pumpkin with Spiced Pumpkin paint. Let dry and then apply a second coat, if necessary.

Create Dimension

Create dimension on your pumpkin with Jack-O-Lantern Orange for the highlights and Burnt Orange for the low lights. Blend all edges of the paint colors so there are no sharp lines. Let dry.

Paint Leaves

Hold a scrap of cardboard under the paper mache leaves and base coat with Hauser Light Green. Let dry and apply a second coat if necessary. Add dimension by painting on the veins in the leaves with Hauser Medium Green.

Cut Doily

Cut out the very center of the cotton lace doily.

Place Lace on Pumpkin

Carefully roll the leaves around the stem and position the doily over the top of the pumpkin.

Add Decou-Page Underneath Doily

Lift up the doily and generously apply Decou-Page Medium over the entire surface of the pumpkin that comes in contact with the lace doily.

Press Doily Into Decou-Page

Use your fingers to press the lace doily into the Decou-Page Medium.

Add Decou-Page To Top of Doily

Apply a generous coat of Decou-Page Medium over the top of the lace doily. Make sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies of the lace and don’t worry about the excess because it will dry clear.
