Tutorial team challenge : rope & twine.

Hi there!

As I said in a previous post, I am surrounded by musicians. Hubby has a Djembé... FYI, It's an African drum.

I get that not everyone has a Djembé...! But I think you could use this technique for many other things: cushion, wall art, carpet, etc.

To avoid being hurt or to scratch the floor if the Djembé falls, my husband used to put a blue foam and duck tape around the drum, over the metallic attach. It did the job, but I didn't want it to sit dressed up like this in my living room!
When I got challenged to make a project using rope & twine, I first thought doing a rug... But the Djembé had to move back in our living room bcz I am changing the vocation of the room where it used to be stored. I decided to dress up the Djembé for it to be allowed in my living space! icon
The first thing I did, was to create a homemade loom, using scrap wood and nails. I put nails every 3/8".
I attached the rope braided cotton to the nails. I estimated I would need 13 ropes wide to replace the blue foam & duck tape part.
Then, I inserted different kind of yarn to create a weaving.
With a comb, I tightened the yarn. I also inserted some pompoms.
I thought my project could use some colors, so I died the rope in blue, red, brown and burgundy, using Rit dye.
Now! I had a real struggle about this part... An inner conflict... really! I had it when I bought it, I had it when I choose to use it...

Even though I rather not use real fur, for very personal reasons, months ago I was in a fur workshop and I bought a bag of leftovers, thinking that at least, I would respectfully use all the pieces of the animal who gave its life for our comfort.

So... I hot glued those pieces of fur on my weaving... I kind of hided the stitches between each weaving with fur, I really love the result, it looks very tribal!

Attaching the weaving around the Djembé. And now... the final result!

Wow! I would call this a "labor of love" - you gotta love it. When you can join function with beauty, it must look something like this.
