If you are looking for a unique hostess gift idea for Christmas or Thanksgiving, consider cement coasters. You could pair them with a coffee gift card or a bottle of wine. How would you gift them? Or, you could make these for yourself. Merry Christmas to me!

I started this project with three silicone coaster molds.

I don’t know if this part is necessary but I melted coconut oil and greased my coasters thoroughly.

I used plastic wrap to do this but you could use your fingers.

I received this big package of assorted foils when I was going to make some resin earrings.

I decided on these colors for my coasters.

I don’t know why but I expected the container to be filled with pieces of gold foil and it was one large piece. I ended up getting another container and breaking the next one into pieces and pressed it into the coconut oil here and there.

I pressed the foil here and there and moved it around as needed.

Here is how the container looked.

And this is how it came out of the container.

I pressed the foils into all three silicone molds.

Time for the concrete. I used Rockite brand.

I started with the concrete powder and added water.

I start with less water and then add more bit by bit.

Stir until it is pancake batter consistency. It will set up rather quickly so don’t dilly dally.

Try to make sure there aren’t any lumps or powder at the bottom.

Pour into each mold. Here is the most important part of this project, make sure your surface is level or your coaster will have more cement on one side than the other.

Because the silicone molds are not very stable so I find putting them on an old cookie sheet is helpful for moving them until they are set. It doesn’t take long for them to be firm so you can always wait 30 minutes then move them.

Now that it has been overnight, I’m ready to pop these coasters out of the molds.

Because of the coconut oil, they come out very easily.

This is the gold foil.

Beware the coconut oil. I somehow got too much in this area.

And here are all three done. I need to seal them before I use them. What type of sealer would you use?

I think they are gorgeous, perfect for gift giving.

This one is my favorite.

Here is a picture of all the cement coasters that I have done so far.

They are all very nice, but I like the blue and green toned ones best. What did you use on them to create the colors and patterns?

They are lovely and I have been wanting to try making coasters, however, a coaster is supposed to absorb moisture, correct? Every wonderful looking design I see is pretty, but I can't imagine any of them being highly efficient and functional. The little lip on yours would cause condensation to be captured, but then the glass would drip when picked-up. For many years, I have been an ardent fan of "Coasterstone" coasters as they absorb the moisture perfectly, keeping glass and surfaces dry. Even though they offer numerous designs, it would be fun to make something with a personal touch.

I see it has been a year since the first post and wondering how your designs have functioned and held up.? Does the concrete absorb moisture? Does water puddle? What did you use as a sealer, sure that would also affect absorption. Think I would put felt or cork or some other form of protection on the bottom to prevent surface scratches.

Thank you. Your creations are terrific!

Opps and duh. Just read post regarding your using clear nail polish as a sealer. Some designs would need full coverage and, as you pointed out, that would negate the absorption. How are the coasters holding up and are the areas that are not sealed staining or degrading?

Thank you for your time and patience with all my questions. You would think this is an issue of national security. 😂 But, hey, you never know where a coaster could end up.🤭
