This is a quick overview of the US flag. The whole process was made by arm knitting, and took about 15 minutes to make.
Use a chain cast on to start by casting on 7 stitches alternating between white yarn and red yarn.

Continue knitting, taking care that you make sure your knitting each stitch with the right colour. You should have straight lines of white and red.
Each time you knit with one colour, carry the unused colour along the back of the flag.
Continue knitting until the stripes are as long as you'd like them before the blue is added. It's important to mention that I've used my arms to knit this, and every has different sized arms so you may need more or less rows than what I've knitted onto my flag.
Tie the blue yarn onto one side and knit 3 stitches of it.
When you get to the white stitch with the blue twirl the yarns around each other so there won't be an unknitted gap between the white and blue section of flag.
Once you've knitted the flag to the length you want it's time to cast off. You do this by knitting 2 loops, then passing the first knitted loop over the second and dropping it off. Carry on knitting one more stitches then dropping the back stitch over the front one until you have no stitches left.
The blue has been cast off so far, now onto the stripes!
Once the entire flag has been cast off, pull the remaining yarn through the last loop, and hide the tails into the back of the flag.
Sew on tufts of wool, or buttons for the stars and PRESTO!!!! You've got a gorgeous flag.
