It looks like an old book...right? But this easy to overlook book shelf item hides a secret! Can you guess what it is?

This easy project makes a place to hide things in plain sight!

First, gather your supplies. You'll need a ruler, pencil, utility cutter, Mod Podge/glue, and a paint brush. You'll also need a old hardback book. My grandma gave me this old dictionary when I went to college and in her family, you NEVER get rid of anything that grandma gives you (she checks, lol). Thank you, Grandma! ❤

Using the ruler and a pencil, draw your 'cut' lines around the parameter of the pages. Leave about an inch on all sides to ensure plenty of bulk and strength is left behind after the cutting stage.

Next, use the utility cutter to carefully (please CAREFULLY!) cut along all of your cut lines.

If you are concerned about cutting yourself during this process, you can get a pair of awesome anti-cut gloves and wear them while slicing your pages. They sell them in the kitchen/cooking section of stores or you can find them on Amazon. I had a couple of near-misses with the blade and my fingers. There's a lot of cutting so please be careful!

Continue carefully cutting along your cut lines and removing the paper as you go until you've sliced down to the back cover of the book.

Woo-hoo - you've gotten through the hard part!

Using the Mod Podge or glue and the paint brush, apply several coats along all of the page edge surfaces of the book - the inside and the outside. You'll want all of those pages to stick together as one! Allow to dry between each coat and also try test opening the pages to see if there are any places that could use extra glue.

Once your last glue coat has fully dried, add your special, hide-able items inside, close the book, and display in plain sight.

Here's a quick video of the project's process:

One of the first place a thief will look. All they have to do is swipe the books off the shelf and they generally fall open.

It's a great idea, but remember thieves know this trick!!
