We have had this table and bankette for more than 30 years. It survived 5 kids and several years of daycare kids but was looking kind of tired and wanted to refresh the look.
Step one I washed down the whole thing with TSP and let it dry.
I painted the bench and bottom of the table with Zinsser Bull's Eye 1 2 3 primer, this allows for covering shiny surfaces without sanding first.
Here's the bottom of the table all painted.
It took 3 coats to cover completely. I stained the inside areas with a stain . the stain bled alittle into the primer so I just touched up those areas.
I stained the table top a dark stain and then removed the flower area with a rag freehand, really didn't have a plan but had seen this design before and really liked it.
Here is the finished product after a little mishap of my cat jumping on the table and repairing the varnish it turned out great. I will do a clear varnish on top when the Minnesota weather warm up a little and I can do that outside.
