Flush Mount French Cleat
Making an upholstered back cushion for a dining banquette. I think the cleat is the right way to hang, but want to eliminate the gap in the back.
Cushion will be foam over 1/4” plywood, and attaching 2”x2”s along perimeter edges for the depth. So would I recess the cleat on the cushion side, or attach directly to 2x2?

Are is the 2x2s along the back of the cushion board? If so that should create plenty of depth for the French cleat.
If the 2x2s are around the outer edge, you'll have to recess the cleat.
Recess the french cleat to the back of the cushion. It would have to be the same thickness as the 2X2's. Glue the french cleat to the back of the cushion with construction adhesive and drive a screw through the 2X2's on the sides into the french cleat.
I would just use one of the metal flush cleats and skip the 2x2s, that I don't see what purpose they serve since you stated you want it flush to the wall. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=french+cleat+30+inch&crid=3CCZFLPSVDKB&sprefix=french+cleat%2Caps%2C664&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_9_12 I would mount one side of the cleat to the plywood on the back of the cushion before I upholster it, then use spray glue to mount the foam on the board, and then add your fabric. You can also pre-drill holes in the foam and board to do a button tufting. buy some extra plain buttons for the back, and a six inch tufting needle, I also get fabric for the back to cover up the strings etc.
A French cleat is a way of securing a cabinet, mirror, artwork or other object to a wall. It is a molding with a 30–45 degree slope used to hang cabinets or other objects. French cleats can be used in pairs, or with a cleat mounted to the wall and a matching edge cut into the object to be hung.
is this what you mean https://krovelmade.com/pages/how-to-install
Hi Kathy, you can also use hooks or a short metal curtain rod to hang your cushions. Add some fabric loops, ribbons or a cord to your pillow and hang.
You'd need to measure the finished depth of your piece, including foam and fabric if you have it rolling over the edge, and reverse math it so it sits flush. Love French cleats, they're awesome.
Z-clips may work well for you. They are like french cleats but hold items closer to the wall. I use these z-clips and they work well: https://amzn.to/31IaVI4
