Painted Marble Fireplace Makeover
I've wanted to demo our 90s "Starry Night" fireplace ever since we moved into our home two years ago.
Tearing out marble tile wasn't in the budget nor did it seem like a good use of our time since the marble itself was in great shape. Painting it was an easy, inexpensive option with a huge impact!
I started by prepping the surface for paint. I wiped everything down with soapy water, removing all the cobwebs from behind the glass. Then I gave the marble a light sanding with 120 and 60 grit sanding wedges.
I taped everything off with frog tape to prevent the off-white primer from bleeding onto my mantel.
Apply 2-3 coats of oil-based primer. Make sure you use the oil-based Zinsser!
Apply 1-2 topcoats of latex paint
Touchup your surface -- grout any large gaps, and caulk between your tile and surrounding trim if necessary.
Add any additional decorative pieces of trim. Seal with Polycrylic protective finish. Sand with 220 wedge in between layers.
I also created this pennant banner from scrap fabric and hung it from clear Command hooks!

Have a question about this project?
Hi great and clear description of the project. Could you confirm if you actually use this fireplace i.e. is the project ok to do if I light a fire in the fireplace? Thanks
