Flank the fireplace. Consider your fireplace the art in the room and cover the walls on each side with wallpaper. By papering the walls on both sides of the chimney (but not the chimney itself), you make the entire fireplace wall stand out.
In addition to the beauty of the wallpaper itself, you have the option of adding a paint color to the chimney to tie it together. By choosing a paint that complements the paper, you create an even more curated, vibrant and personalized look in the space.
You also can paint the chimney the same color as the other three walls in the space. This makes the wallpaper stand out and draws your attention to the fireplace wall.
By covering the chimney-adjacent walls, you get a chance to go bold and beautiful with your wallpaper while having the freedom to keep the chimney and fireplace color itself more calm, monotone or relatively neutral.

I honestly don't think covering brick with contact paper is the best idea. Brick is not smooth and the contact paper will not adhere well. Have you considered painting it?
You will need to clean the area and if your brick isn't smooth, you will have issues with it sticking. But if you have a good, smooth surface you can add it. I wouldn't do this on a working fireplace because the heat will cause it to bubble.
So long as you don’t plan to use the fireplace, you’d probably need to box or cover over the brick with a smooth surface first. Contact paper won’t stick to brick directly.
There may not be enough surface area on the brick, the contact paper might not stick as well as you'd like.

Don't do it! It will be a waste of time and money as for one reason, it won't stick to brick, it will collect bits of rubble and dust only.
What would be your goal in trying to do this?
Due to the uneven texture of the brick, contact paper will not stay stuck.
I doubt you could get contact paper to stick to the bricks.
If you are wanting a different look there are many ways to accomplish this rather than "trying" to get contact paper to stick to the rough brick surface. Many suggestions have already been provided, so I won't add more.
Oh heavens no. You can glue on thin plywood and paint but contact paper will be an ugly mess on brick.
Clean surface throughly first then fill in grooves with mortar. After you have a smooth surface you can apply it.
