I love working with denim, it is so versatile and hard wearing. This project is inspired by the idea of combining a traditional chair with modern patchwork denim. I was curious to see how the two very different eras of style would fit together. I found a chair on a second hand website just waiting for some attention...
I started the project stripping back the chair to the springs, prepping the wood and painting with chalk paint. I love working with chalk paint as the only preparation is to wash down the surface first.
Whilst waiting for the paint to dry I pieced together denim from various jeans. I was careful to remove waistbands - the thought of trying to stretch a waistband taught around a wooden arm didn't appeal! My sewing machine is not too keen on various thicknesses of denim, I suggest changing to a denim sewing machine needle plus a walking foot. Stitch slowly with a long stitch, your sewing machine will thank you!
Gradually I rebuilt the chair, starting with hessian, then fire retardant foam before placing, stretching and attaching the denim. Visit my blog post to see a time lapse video and step by step pictures of the chair being rebuilt.

Beautiful! My aunt did this with a quilt which turned out very pretty for a bedroom.
