Thrift Store Find Makeover With DIY Chalk Paint

After a lot of cleaning and a fresh coat of DIY chalk paint, this $5.00 Goodwill find is now being used as a plant stand and display shelf .
This was a CD rack, I think. How it got so dirty, filled with paint spatters and grime is something I don't want to know. I wanted a cheap piece to try out DIY chalk paint and this fit that bill.

You can see just how filthy it was! I almost passed it by, but for $5.00, it was worth a chance.

I used a mixture of items to clean and sanitize the entire shelf before sanding it.
After lots of cleaning and a light sanding, it was looking better.
I applied the chalk paint with a nylon brush, let it dry and then used a polycrylic spray sealer. I chose not to use wax for this piece and the spray sealer worked great. It gives a different finished look than wax, but it works for this. I very lightly distressed the edges with sand paper.
I'm using it as a plant stand,/display shelf for some of my coastal decor.
It fits in nicely in my breakfast nook. The lesson I learned is you never know what potential even a filthy thrift store find can have until you take it home!
