This Glider has weathered many Summer Storms...BUT the Canopy barely survived One Summer Season. After the first wind storm, the metal canopy frame twisted and was destroyed...But, as if by Magic, the Glider has kept on swinging!

Last Summer, I tried replacing the Canopy by rigging up Silk Parasols for sun shade. The parasols looked pretty and worked to shade the glider for a bit, but then the parasols twisted, tore, and fell apart.

And Here We Are in a New Summer Season - the Glider still Glides...But Once Again, We Need a Sun Shade Canopy...and Fast!

Hello Pool Noodles and Bird Netting!

Let's Go!

Materials You Need:

3 Jumbo Pool Noodles (3 inch diameter x 52 inch length)

Bird Netting

Baling Wire and Wire Cutters

The Jumbo Noodles will be the frame of the Canopy. One Noodle will fit over the top rail of the Glider. Jumbo Noodles are Sturdy and the Perfect Fit for the Frame of the Glider.

How to Construct a Pool Noodle Canopy:

Step 1: Cut 1 Noodle lengthwise to the center open space of the Noodle.

Step 2: Place the Cut Noodle over the Top Bar of the Glider. It will fit and stay securely in place. This is the base of the Canopy.

Step 3: Measure and Cut Noodle 2 into 2 equal pieces....these 2 pieces will be the Sides of the Canopy.

Pool Noodles cut with little effort...but be sure to cut with care to not tear the Noodle.

The Noodle Halves will be the Sides of the Canopy.

Step 4: Ready to Cut Notches into the Side Noodles...Measure and Cut a Notch the Width of the Top Pole...Just Like a Lincoln Log.

Cut through one side of the Noodle...the opening will fit over the top Noodle.

Remove the cut piece...

Place over the top Noodle to measure...trim, if necessary so that it fits securely over the top Noodle.

Both sides will have notches...

The Cut Notches will fit Over the Top Noodle and Under the Front of the Canopy Noodle...

Step 5: With Baling Wire, Secure the Noodles together...

Twist and wire the Noodles together...

Wire the Noodle Canopy to the Glider Frame.

The Noodle Canopy is in Place...Now for the Canopy Cover..

Step 6: Experiment with Different Types of Canopy Cover Material...

I love the look of this Black/White Striped Tablecloth...but It was a Tad Too Heavy for the Noodles...the Canopy started to Droop...but it did give good coverage for shade.

Next, I tried the Bird Netting...the Volume of Netting is Great...the Weight is almost Weightless...and the Netting Works to Create a Softly Shaded Area.

Drape the Netting Over the Canopy and Tie the Ends together in the Back to secure the Netting in place.

The Net Canopy looks like a Fancy Veiled Ladies Spring Bonnet...

And Creates the Perfect Spot for Sweet Summertime Siestas...

Take a Break and Enjoy!

Nice solution. The netting provides some shade and still allows for air circulation. If you still want to use the tablecloth you can insert dowel rods, broomsticks, electrical conduit into the pool noodles to stiffen them.

Hi William - dowel rods are a great idea to stiffen the noodles - thanks!
