How I Turned a Broken Chain Linked Fence Into a Privacy Wall

When we 1st bought our home we fenced in the backyard because we had a dog at the time. Even now I like having a fence to prevent children from escaping!

Unfortunately a deer or maybe a bear came and tried to jump this area of the fence that was past a retaining wall that belongs to my neighbors and broke it…. so it didn't look great.

I decided to make this into a privacy wall instead. I got these 6 by 8 shadow box wood fence pieces from Home Depot. They were each $83. Since I didn't need a lot I was able to get away with 2 pieces.

I leaned each 6 by 8 board against the existing fence and used wire to connect it to the posts in 6 different locations so that it was sturdy.

You will need wire, I used a 16 gauge galvanized steel so that wouldn't rust as well as gloves and pliers as well to get it pulled tight against the existing fence.

I wrapped around twice at each spot that I was securing and then using pliers pulled as tight as I could and then wrap the 2 ends together.

I tried putting the wire in spots that weren't very noticeable like underneath the boards or in between and then I used pliers to tuck them in closer to the boards.

I also got two additional fence boards for the end which was on a bit of a corner as well as the middle to connect the 2 fence pieces together.

They also provide these small pieces of wood to connect the 2 boards. I used some for the end corner and cut them at angles to butt up against the retianing wall.

Our neighborhood cat seems to be a big fan of my work!

Now I realize the color varies in the wood. I think that's what happens when you send your husband to pick up the boards rather than going yourself to try and find more consistency. I will probably stain it down-the-line so that the variation isn't noticeable.

Finally I connected the 2 pieces of 6 x 8 boards together using more of those small wood pieces and drill them together. Then placed an extra fence board on top so that it wasn't noticeable where the brake was.

Instead of wire, you could just buy U bolts or brackets going right over the piping of the chain link fence and fasten to the wooden fence. You'd tighten the space between the two fences as well as have a stronger construct. Might just fit flush to the retaining wall.
