I was looking for a fun way to add lighting and some greenery to a dark area of our backyard. I grabbed some planters, 4x4s and solar string lights to make this space feel super cozy for the summer!

Adding this cozy touch has made such an impact on our outdoor space and it was so simple! Before placing the planters, I set a paver under each to provide a stable and level surface. If you’re doing this on concrete, you could skip this step. Our area is mulch so we needed to make sure it wasn’t going anywhere before proceeding!

Once the surface was level, I drilled holes through the bottom of the planter to attach the 4x4. Since the 4x4 is quite heavy, I used rocks to weigh it down. While adding the rocks, I made sure the 4x4 sat level. I made 4 of these. Once they were all upright, I was able to string my string lights. Since there isn’t any electrical wiring out here, I used solar lights! These have worked great and didn’t require any additional work. I attached the lights to opposite poles to make a cross in the middle.

After the lights were attached, I added some flowers to the planters. I decided to use marigolds and some lemongrass to deter mosquitoes! I love the color it adds to this otherwise boring space.

This has become one of our favorite outdoor renovations because it gave so much life to this small corner of our yard! We eventually added a firepit and foresee many memories being made out here!

Heads up- you may need to check with your local HOA or codes to see if this project requires any approval or permits!
