How to Replace a Porch Column

Porches are beautiful, add a lot of curb appeal, and give us great places to relax, entertain, and watch the world go by. But there's no doubt that there is maintenance involved with porches, too - usually basic cleaning, painting, and staining. But every once in awhile you may find that a column needs to be replaced because of decay.
Replacing a porch column is easier than you may think. If you have basic carpentry skills, removing a decaying porch column can not only save you money but also make your porch safer. In this post we're listing the steps to replace typical wood porch columns - you can find many more details, including a complete supplies list, on our site (click the url at the bottom of the post).
First, do a bit of research to discover what you need to know before you begin. You will need to know:

- that the column you select can carry the weight of your porch

- that the type of column (what it's made of, style, etc.) works for your porch

- if the column needs ventilation or not

We also cannot stress enough the importance of taking safety precautions and to not undertake such a project if you do not possess the necessary skills. Contacting a reputable contractor is always an option.
Then comes the time to remove the old column and detaching any railings, if needed. Use a hack saw or reciprocating saw to cut the screws or nails holding the balustrade to column. Take care not to damage the top and bottom rails.
Next, prepare the new column: measure the distance from the top of the column to the porch floor. Use that measurement to cut (if necessary) the new porch column.

Make sure you mimic your existing porch columns in design. You may have to cut from both ends to match the design of the other porch columns.

Also, you'll want to make sure your porch column is ventilated properly. We drilled holes in both the top and bottom of the column.
Now it's time to raise the roof & remove the old column:

- Measure the distance between the floor and the top of your jack. Add 1 inch for clearance purposes. Subtract that measurement from the column height measurement you took in Step 1.

- Use this new measurement and cut the 4x4 post to length.

- Position the jack next to the column you are removing. Place the 4x4 on the jack.

- Slowly raise the jack until the column is free from the roof (or beam). You may hear a little cracking sound which is normal. Do not raise the roof any further than necessary to remove the porch column.

- Slide the column out from underneath the roof and slide the new column back in.
Ensure the new column is straight with a level. Also make sure it is aligned properly in comparison to other columns on your porch.

Slowly lower the 4x4 post using the jack and secure with screws or nails. Reattach any rails if needed.

Replacing a porch column is a fairly straight-forward process and although it may be a little different for other types of columns, the process is basically the same. Have you ever replaced a porch column?
