How can I update a white bamboo table and chair set?
My white bamboo table and chairs I picked up from a friend need help. It's very distressed and looks cramped in this dark apartment with no windows. I'd like to know how to make it look acceptable.

I would like to replace handles and change color of wood. The cane back chairs need repair and I would like to know if perhaps I can cover them.
Since the space is dark, you could paint it a light color.
Hi Jo, I would freshen it up by spray painting it a nice light color that you love with a spray paint and primer combo. Spray paint makes it easy to get in all the nooks and crannies of the bamboo, but if you can't get the table and chairs outside to do the spray painting regular paint would work too but you'll have to use a primer first. Never spray paint inside. If the bamboo has a poly or sheen on it, make sure to sand it a little, and then clean the sanding dust away, and then paint.
No. Are you open to painting? Areas can be patched and refurbished before painting. Here’s a link from a favorite blogger that I follow to give you some ideas including a gallery viewing of her paint make over furniture pieces.

Hi Jo, you can repaint the bamboo set in a light color. White is always a good choice and if the paint has a sheen to it so much better. Most of the work will go into prepping the set for painting. This article will help you with that - https://furnishingtips.com/painting-bamboo-furniture-13-steps-to-doing-it-right/
Scrape off all the old flaking paint and update it with spray paint. White is classic but you could do any color you love!
Maybe rub it down and paint it a darker colour to suit it's situation, then at least it won't stand out like a sore thumb!
Do any repairs it needs.
Since it is an apartment, I am going to assume you have a landlord and a lease, you would need permission IN WRITING before doing anything to the walls, such as painting. If you can get that, do so and paint, but be ready to restore to the original color when the lease is up.
In the mean time you can spray paint the set, I would suggest sanding lightly first, spray paint outdoors in light layers, allowing it to dry between layers, this is to prevent runs and drips. Of course, the color is something that pleases you.
You could also make changes in the lighting with different bulbs and lamps.
Paint it white and freshen it up and brighten it up ad more lighting maybe track lighting I have seen some people put up fake windows with lights behind them and it looks hood add curtains to

You can keep it natural and if it has fabric seats change the fabric
Give the table and chairs a face lift with a fresh new coat of paint. If you area is too dark paint the walls a nice clean white. If that still isn't enough light add a fake window or even a solar tube or sky light.
Thanks all for the inspiration. I've decided to repaint it white and change up chair pads ... And paint a window with a scene on the wall beside the table, since my landlady said she didn't mine as long as it looked good!
I really appreciated all the comments that have really inspired me to do this. I'll take b4 and after photos for you to see. After I get over this bout of MRSA. :) Thanks all.
