My builder used regular trim paint on my stairs
these are the stairs way my builder finished them. He used regular trim paint on the stair treads. I didnt really dislike them but within a year the treads were pretty beat up. In this picture you can see the risers are off white and the treads are black like the handrail. There is also a small piece of mounding just under the tread. I decided to go with off white treads but leave the black piece of mouling.
i went to my local hardware store and asked what to do. They suggested a paint that is made for floors and porches. I would have assumed that was only for exterior but ”No” it’s for interior as well. It comes in a couple of standard colors but you can have it tinted in quite a few other colors. I got really lucky because they had a color that was very close to my existing white trim. Unfortunalately you will need to do a good sanding job on the existing paint. Then make sure you primer after you sand.
To add some flare I found some great border wallpaper that was the perfect hieght for my risers. I love that it looks like ceramic tile.
Heres this final look. I’ll give you a good tip. When you need to paint stairs and your bedroom is on the second floor, DON’T paint all of them at the same time or you’ll be sleeping on the couch. I started by working on treads 1, 3 and 5. That allowed us to still walk up and down the stairs. once those were done I switched and did treads 2 and 4. It makes the job last a bit longer because everything neefed 2 coats of paint. But we needed access to the 2nd flooor. I have dark hardwood floors and this really lightened the stairwell. Super happy with how they turned out.

Do you think the border wall paper is durable when there are dogs and children up and down all day. Can you polyurethane over the border for protection?
