You could paint them and make a huge checkers or chess board. We are in the process of doing this (pretty much done except for carving and painting the chess pieces).

How to Paint Concrete Pavers
Staining the pavers may last longer. Paint will likely flake off after a couple of years.
If you want to make the area bigger, after washing and staining the concrete use pressure treated lumber to outline the squares. It will look like a large checkerboard pattern.
In this case, I prefer to stain them. But painting them will still work.
I would stain them rather than painting after cleaning with a high pressure hose and drying.
Pressure wash them and then stain with a masonry stain when dry. The stain will last longer than paint. You could do a pathway or a patio.

Yes you can paint them with a Concrete Floor paint. Otherwise mix them with new contrast slabs and form a pattern. A good Power Wash might bring the slabs back to original colour!
