Upcycled Storage Bins
Making these upcycled storage bins is a fun sewing project. You can make them out of any fabric, but we made ours from old jeans and some fabric cut-offs. I think the jean storage bins look really sharp. These small storage bins are perfect for storing anything from makeup to pens, art supplies, yarn - basically anything you want!
- Sewing Machine
- Scissors
- Pins or Clips
- Cutting Mat
- Rotary cutter
- Ruler
- Iron
- Ironing Board
- ½ yard of fabric from a pair of upcycled denim jeans (this is the main fabric)
- *½ yard of upcycled fabric from scraps of left-over fabric (this is the lining)
- ½ yard of light or medium weight fusible interfacing
- Cotton thread
For our bins we cut...
- (2) 13×13 pieces of the jeans/denim fabric
- (2) 13×13 pieces of the lining fabric
- (4) 13×13 pieces of the interfacing
Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of both outer pieces of the denim fabric and both lining pieces.
With right sides facing, pin or clip together both sides and the bottom of the outer denim fabric and the lining.
With a 1/4” seam allowance, sew sides and bottom of the outer denim squares and the lining squares. Press your side seams open.
Create box corners for the outer denim and the lining. Check out the collage to see how you can do this.
Turn the lining right side out and denim bin inside. Place the outer denim bin inside the lining, so that right sides are together. Match up the side seams and pin or clip into place.
Sew around the top so the inner and outer bins are sewn together. Leave an opening approximately 4" to 5” for turning.
Tug the lining through the opening. This way the denim outer fabric is showing the right side, as well as the lining showing the right side out.
Situate the lining and denim so it is ready to sew closed.
Sew the opening closed using a top stitch. Fold the lining over and enjoy your new small storage bin!
Repeat for each bin and enjoy storing your art supplies, makeup brushes, or other goodies inside!

This is a great project. Your directions are very easy to follow. I have several pairs of jeans to use. I made chair cushions last summer. This will be my new project.☺
