Rustic Modern Display Shelf

In an attempt to create some display space in an awkward nook above a bed, I cut a piece of reclaimed barn board to size and added two shelf brackets from IKEA.
The bed in this kids' bedroom sits partially under a window so we opted not to use a headboard. To draw attention to the head of the bed somehow plus make a space to keep some old toys and souvenirs which couldn't be parted with, a display shelf seemed like the right thing.
I painted the IKEA brackets in a matte black finish with acrylic craft paint to contrast with the weathered rustic barn board.
The barn board could be cut to size to fit exactly between the window frame and the wall, has a striking graphic look and has space to display and keep a few kids' treasures.
It draws attention to the head of bed in place of a headboard which would have blocked an awkward corner of the window. The addition of a reading light creates a cozy corner in this kids' room.
