Upcycled Sweater Bunny Pillow for Spring

1 Hour
Easy
I've added a bit of spring fun to my sofa by making some adorable bunny pillows. They are really easy to make and, are made from old wool sweaters and scrap pieces of felt.
All you need is an old wool sweater which you can felt by putting it in a hot wash in the machine. Some felt scraps for decoration, embroidery thread, fibre filling and paper to make a template.
One sweater will make one Bunny. First lay your sweater out flat and cut off the sleeves. Pin a large piece of paper to the front of the sweater to make a template.
On the paper draw out your bunny face and feet. Cut out the sweater from round the edge of the paper. This will be your pillow body. Before sewing up your pillow, make the face.
Cut out and pin your paper face to some cream felt and cut this out. The eyes are made with 4 concentric circles of felt stuck ontop of one another. The eye lids are a semi-circle. More details are on the blog. Stitch these eyes to the felt face along with a triangle nose.
The mouth and teeth are simply embroidered onto the face just using a basic running stitch. Then hand stitch the face to the sweater body using any stitch your prefer.
Use the sleeves of the sweaters to cut out big bunny ears of your choice.
Turn your sweater body and ears inside out and stitch up leaving a small hole to stuff it. Turn them the right sides out and stuff with fiber filling and sew the holes shut. (I use old pillows for my fibre filling). Sew the ears to the body.
To give your bunny cushion more character, you can add some embellishments. Such as ear inners in a contrasting fabric & feet pads. Felt flowers and hearts are great for hiding any holes in your jumper and add some extra interest. Don't forget to make a pom pom tail. Click here to see my bunny treat bags post, where there is a tutorial for a very clever way to make pom poms really easily and quickly.
Not sure what the cat thinks about it ? If you like to make pillows out of old sweaters you'll love my fabulous Mountain Sweater cushions I made. Which were even easier to make.
