Faux Grain Sack Painted Hutch

This was a treasured family heirloom that one of my clients had cherished for a very long time. She had just recently moved and wanted to use this piece in her new space, but she felt the hutch needed a little updating and that's where I came in!
I began sanding down the piece to give it some tooth, which means that the paint will be able to adhere to the wood. Luckily it wasn't a shiny finish to begin with, so the sanding was minimal.
I used a pretty off white paint color I had on hand already, Polished Pearl by Behr. I only used this color for the inside. I used a color called Tabby Cat Gray by Sherwin Williams for the outside and the doors of the piece. I taped off for the grain sack design just using some painters tape. I also taped off the thinner lines on either side.
I used a dark navy acrylic to fill in the grain sack stripe. I applied several coats to achieve the right amount of coverage. After the piece was all painted, I distressed it mostly on the edges and the corners. I then used Minwax stain in Provincial to give it a more aged appearance.
I used a rag to apply and then a clean rag to take off the excess.
I followed with a paste wax to protect the painted finish. I use a very small amount in sections and kind of apply like butter. I then used a clean rag to take off the excess and buff so there is a slight sheen left behind.
Here is a detail of the door.
I also, painted the hardware to give it a more cohesive look. Visit my website for more information on this post and to see my other pieces!
