I received this hutch from a good friend and was so excited to get started on it right away as I had a beautiful vision for this piece. I loved that you are able to see the top of the buffet on this piece where my creative ideas could really be put to use.
I decided on painting the outside in Country Chic Paint’s Cobblestone and the inside in Vanilla Frosting. The top piece I sanded down to its natural wood and chose Country Chic Smoky Quartz Glaze rather than a traditional stain. I have only used their glaze on painted furniture, never on unfinished wood before. I’m not going to lie, I was a bit nervous to try this, but I cannot say how happy I am I made that decision.
To apply the glaze I did long even strokes right across the top. The first time I was applying them in smaller areas, but as it dried you could see the brush strokes were I stopped and started, not the look you want. I applied about 4-5 coats to achieve the look I wanted and by applying long even strokes it took care of the brush stroke problem. Keep in mind that the glaze dries quite quickly. I was able to play around with the amount I used and the different effects you could achieve with the brush. The end result is a lighter base with darker brush strokes on top that is just beautiful. Customers in my store are just amazed that I was able to achieve this look with a glaze. To protect the top of the buffet I applied two thin layers of Country Chic Tough coat with a foam brush.
To complete the rest of the hutch, I took a wet lint free cloth and rubbed down areas to give it a bit of a distressed look. You can achieve this once you have applied your two coats and the paint has started to dry. The wood of the piece peeking through the grey turned out beautifully. I then applied in the detailing the same glaze I used on the top and wiped it down with a wet cloth. This helps to highlight these areas ever so subtly. To complete the hutch, I applied Country Chic Paint’s natural wax as a protective finish. It really helps to protect the piece and give it a professional finished look to it.
