Custom Wooden House Number Signs

by Amy Brammer
As I started taking what I know about leather tooling and adapting it to wood, I started making custom wooden signs for my friends. These are some of the house number signs I have made.
I like to use the expensive pine shelving that they sell at Home Depot. They are already sanded smooth, unwarped and really nice to dremel and/or paint.
I cut the pine into any shape I need, then route the edges with my router. I create the artwork on my computer, then transfer the pattern onto the wood using simple carbon paper.
I like to carve in the outlines with my Dremel tool .. just to add another dimension. That is not a necessary step .. I have also done them where I just start painting with outdoor acrylic paints. (I love the DecoArt Patio Paints.)
When I am done, I spray with 3-4 coats of Outdoor spar varnish, add some screw eyes to the top and it's ready to hang.
The next time I make a sign, I will take pics of all the steps.
