How To Update A Farmhouse Table With Paint

Easy
This farmhouse table has been in our family for over 20 years. I have so many memories of our family sitting around this piece of furniture. When we moved, this table didn't fit in our new space but I just couldn't part with it so it became the desk in our office. Luckily, when we finished our lake house fixer upper, this sturdy table had a new home. Unfortunately, it had a honey-oak stain that didn't fit into the rustic modern vision I had for the lake house decor. No worries...I have a solution.
I am going to prepare the surface and paint it with chalk style paint to give it a farmhouse feel. Chalk style paint has amazing adhesion qualities but I promise you, as a professional painter, nothing sticks to grease and grime. Any piece that is worth upcycling is worth the prep work to give it a long-lasting finish.
The bench and the table had some deep scratches from years of use so I prepped them using my tried and true system for painting cabinetry and furniture.
To mix up the paint, see my recipe for making affordable Chalk style paint here.
Once it's prepped and your paint is mixed, you are ready to paint your farmhouse table and bench.
I brushed one coat on the entire surface. Let dry. Lightly buff with a sanding sponge. Repeat.
Using a good quality paint brush and a mohair roller, apply 2 coats of a durable sealer. This will seal the chalk paint and create a durable finish for your table.
