I recently finished a DIY Floating Deck project and have begun to plan for projects to accessorize my new deck. I completed my first accessory project, a DIY Planter Box using redwood left over from my floating deck project.
This jumbo planter measures 2' x 2' and is quite the sturdy beast! But it is perfect for planting the pygmy date palm trees that I love! Here are the abbreviated instructions for how I built this planter, for full details and instructions, please visit my blog at the link at the bottom of this post.
First I cut the boards to build the four sides of the box.
I then drilled pocket holes into the pieces and assembled each side using pocket hole screws and wood glue.
Once all four sides were built, I cut and assembled the boards for the bottom of the planter box.
I then attached the front panel to the left and right panels of the box using wood glue and exterior wood screws.
I then attached the bottom of the planter box using wood glue and exterior wood screws.
Next I attached the back panel of the planter box using wood glue and exterior wood screws.
I then cut the boards for the legs and attached those to the planter box using wood glue and exterior wood screws.
Next, I cut the top trim boards and attached those to the top of the planter box, again with wood glue and exterior wood screws.
I then sanded and stained the planter box, using different colored stain for the top trim, legs and diamond centers (used a lighter stain for these sections), and then a darker stain for the remainder of the planter.
I then moved the planter to its permanent location on my deck and planted a pygmy date palm in it. Here's the completed project:

Have a question about this project?
I also want to know if you lined the planter with something, or just put the dirt in directly. How would this withstand the northern winter's?
I was wondering what you do about drainage. Beautiful!
With the weight of the planter, plus the plant inside, would casters on the bottom be a viable solution? Also, why not stain the boards BEFORE assembly? It looks like it would be difficult to keep each stain separate. It turned out BEAUTIFUL, though. I love it!
