We are rock collectors and have been all our lives. One of my favorite rocks is the geode that is a plain looking sandstone or conglomerate on the outside but inside are quarts in many colors and sometimes maybe a ruby. Rock shops slice them to sell popular gorgeous coasters. The geodes we have collected were the inspiration for my idea to create children and grandchildren's names. We call them sunbursts.
The beautiful lines in the geode slices made me think this would be one way to produce some "sunburst" lines around the names of our children or grandchildren. THEY would do their own name on my cotton canvas backgrounds and These would be placed on the wall by their photos.
This can be done with markers, crayons, pastels, or whatever you have on hand. You can use paper or hardback art cotton canvas like we did. I chose the hardback cotton canvas for a more permanent media.
Write or print the name across the page. We did cursive for the older ones and printed the younger ones. Begin next to the name, in shorter strokes, and explain it will look like an explosion of their name in their favorite colors.
Starting next to the name color with darker hues and move to the lighter hues to give the "sunburst" or "explosive" design.
Follow around the name beginning with a narrower stroke and working into the widest stroke. If they wish, they can color inside the letters with the lightest color at the end. Continue until the entire page is covered.
This is the one that was made from printed letters.
I added my own semi-colored version to put with their names. Each name goes with their years of photos on the wall. This is a great project to do with children when they cannot go out to play, or grandchildren when they come to visit. They will see their sunburst on the wall with their framed school photos. Their creative work will always be on display on the wall. They can be framed or left as is.
My next step will be to frame them and hang them with their photos.
