FARMHOUSE Sign - Should You Make It Or Buy It?

I had such a fun FARMHOUSE project. Let me preface this by saying, this is a ridiculously easy project. But, would you believe a non-crafting friend challenged me to make this from scratch? Well, she did!

I took my stencil with me to make sure I got the length right. I found I had to buy a complete sheet of the wood but the entire sheet was only $8.97. From that one sheet of wood, I was able to get two pieces at 36”, which was the length I needed for the sign and two that were approximately 10”. From that one sheet of wood, I have enough to make two large and two small wooden, farmhouse style signs. Not bad right?

I am not a wood connoisseur nor am I a woodworker but the folks who work at Home Depot were extremely helpful. They helped me choose the perfect, inexpensive and light-weight wood for my project. And I have EXTRA!!!

Once I got the boards home, I used chalk paint to put a light coat of paint on the board and allow it to dry. It did not take very long for the thin coat of chalk paint to dry. Maybe 20 minutes.

I used my signature paint, Dixie Belle Butter Cream, a stencil from Dixie Belle Paint and black paint, which is also from Dixie Belle Paint for the lettering. I used my chip brush that I have used for the last several projects and a large sponge pounce brush to add the lettering.

This is very important. Please allow the lettering to dry completely if you are going to seal the sign. I wanted to seal mine and I did not allow enough time for all of the lettering to dry before adding the Dixie Belle Satin Finish, and I got a little smearing that I had to go back and fix. So be careful.

I had all of the supplies on hand, including the stencil because as I said, I had plans to make my own sign but just had not gotten around to it, but I believe it was between $10.00 and $15.00. So, for approximately $20.00 and a little time, I made my sign and my friend paid more than double that for her sign. Also, my sign is lightweight and does not require anchors in the wall to hold it, while her sign had to be anchored which, in my opinion, is over-kill for a sign.

Working and my 6-year old grandson has been with me for the past 2 weeks. Wow is that life-altering?
