As a state certified Master Gardener, I recently wrote an article for Gulf Coast Gardening, an online publication - the subject being mulch. Dyed mulches are dyed with industrial and smelter wastes and boiler ash. Some states still allow mulch to be made by chipping up chemically treated landscape timbers. These mulches are carcinogenic and have been documented to cause cancer in our pets who come in contact with them. Consider too, any children who may be exposed to this toxic environment. Also, the dye leaches into the soil - detrimental to your plants. Natural mulches are safe and considerably more visibly attractive.
