I reported two dumped supermarket trolleys that became apparent after a bush fire reduction burnoff. They were both dumped in the bushland around the corner to where we live. After a month, there was no contact from the supermarket concerned and they had made no attempt to collect the trolleys which were both fire damaged. Wheels had melted and the plastic edges and handle had also been badly damaged. So, I decided to take one home and turn it into a raised garden bed. We took the wheelbarrow and chucked it in and took it home. The wheels being too damaged to push the trolley home.
When we got it home the first thing I did was to use rolls of coconut fibre to line the trolley. Inside that I put an old plastic tarpaulin with drainage holes cut into it. The tarpaulin on it's own would have looked too ugly. Then filled the main part with potting soil. It still looked rather ugly as the burned bits were very obvious.
So I bought some fake ivy from the dollar store and covered the handle and the worst burned bits with it. I am going to grow insect friendly flowers in this to encourage beneficial insects such as bees and ladybirds into the garden. The front end of the trolley is another section and has no potting mix in it. I am going to put brick with holes in them, bamboo sticks and banksia and pine cones in that area to provide a bug hotel for insects. Native bees will likely use the bamboo and bricks to nest in. I cannot wait to sow the Bergamot seeds I bought but I must as we are currently in winter.
Suggested materials:
  • Potting mix   (Hardware and nursery store)
  • Coconut fibre on a roll   (Hardware and nursery store)
  • Decorative fake ivy   (Dollar store)

Thanks. Tempting to go back and pick up the other one that was dumped along with this one in the bush!
