I was looking for ways to organize my husband's shed. So I went to RedRacks to look for things to use. I came across these two VHS tape crates. At least that is what the cashier told me they were. I liked the look of them. I've used 3 other crates in the past for different purposes in our home. There are nice and sturdy. I knew I would have to either gut them or at least remove some of the dividers for anything to fit in it. I also thought I could attach the crates together to make a box.
One of two VHS tape crates.
I scrubbed them down real good. I then removed alot of the dividers to make the compartments larger.
Removing some of the dividers.
It now started to take shape.
More room for tools.
I used a couple of hinges from an old window I purchased for a different project. I attached them together. I was going to removed the old varnish from the hinges but decided to keep the dark finish. It matched the darkness of the crates.
Adding the hinges.
I added two magnetic strips to the bottom of the crates. And strong magnets to lids of six small containers. My husband found the strips at Harbor Freight for less than $2.00 each. I bought the magnets at Wal-Mart. The strips and magnets had to be strong enough to hold the containers full of screws or nails to the metal strips.
Glue large magnets to the lids of the contai.
I added a two latches to keep the cabinet closed.
I had my husband cut two pieces of peg board for me. One for the outside and the other for the inside of one of the crates. That crate would be the door. I attached the peg board to the outside of the crate.
I made a frame out of some plastic trim I had from a previous project. I attached it to the front of the door.
I then attached the other piece of peg board to the inside of the door. The peg board wasn't wide enough so I improvised. I cut up several yard sticks to fill in the space. And added a small drawer I had too.
The containers kept falling out when ever I opened it. So I attached little bungee cords. Perfect solution.
The inside of the tool cabinet finished.
I then attached a handle to the door and peg hooks to the peg boards. I put some of the small containers inside the cabinet and atrached others to the strip. All done and ready to hang on the wall. My husband will have the pleasure of hanging and filling it.
Finished.
